Murmuration of Lights
December 7-10, 2017
Opening: Thursday, Dec 7th, 5pm
In Santeria tradition white candles are used to elevate spirits and bring peace, and for devotions in remembering and contacting departed souls. Murmuration of Lights collects a broad and colorful array of work in honor of Judy Sherrod. The images will be displayed on glass jar candles, and lit each night of the festival.
Judy was a regular at PhotoNOLA. Her boundless enthusiasm, creative community building, and can-do spirit touch many lives, here and elsewhere. She passed away unexpectedly this summer and in her memory we invited friends to share images that were inspired by, encouraged by, or appreciated by Judy.
Contributing artists include Jane Fulton Alt, Thom Bennett, Sesthasak Boonchai, Laura Burlton, Paula Riff, Euphus Ruth, and Aline Smithson, who offered this perfect tribute in her Lenscratch memorial post:
A few months ago, the photography community lost an amazing photographer, friend, rabble-rouser, organizer, and cheerleader of all things photography. Judy Sherrod made things happen. She started a group called Shootapalooza, organizing photographers to come together and make work, make fun, and make memories. She created the World Largest Cyanotype and started World Cyanotype Day. She was one of those remarkable people who wasn’t interested in her own spotlight, but knew how to encourage people to jump in and enjoy the photographic waters.
– Aline Smithson, from In Memorium: Judy Sherrod
We wanted to do something to recognize Judy during this year’s festival. When Laura Burlton suggested candles, it felt perfect. An exhibition that brings together and illuminates the work of those in her creativity community is exactly the kind of memorial Judy would approve of.
If you knew Judy Sherrod and would like to contribute to this ephemeral installation, we are accepting submissions through November 15th.
