Photographers are invited to submit images for an exhibition of candles in honor of Judy Sherrod (July 6, 1956 – July 28, 2017). The installation will be on display during PhotoNOLA in the International House lobby from December 7-10, 2017.
In Santeria tradition white candles are used to elevate spirits and bring peace, and for devotions in remembering and contacting departed souls. Those who knew Judy are invited to send up to three images for consideration. Selected images will be printed and displayed on the glass jar candles, to be lit each night of the festival.
We would love for this installation to bring together a broad and colorful array of works inspired by, encouraged by, appreciated by Judy. The images can be works that remind you of her, or works that were influenced by her in any way – the interpretation is entirely up to you.
Due to cylindrical shape of candles, vertical (7×5) or square (5×5) images will work best.
Submission deadline: Nov 15, 2017
Exhibition dates: Dec 7-10, 2017
Jpegs should be sized at 300dpi and 2100 pixels high.
Please name files using the following format:
LastName_FirstName_ImageTitle.jpg, i.e., Doe_Jane_BlueMoon2017.jpg
Feel free to also share a few words with your submission. If so inclined you can tell us:
how the image reminds you of Judy,
a favorite moment with Judy,
ways that Judy influenced your artistic practice.
We do not have plans to publicly display any written statements during PhotoNOLA, but may potentially use them in promotions, or to share with Judy’s friends and family members.
Labels will be placed on back of each candle indicating:
title of work
artist’s city of origin
There is no fee to submit but there will be an optional donation of $5 to cover cost of materials.
