BAMBOULA / NOLA
October 25, 2014 – January 25, 2015
Opening: Saturday, Oct 25, 2014, 5-9pm
BAMBOULA / NOLA is a Prospect 3+ satellite show featuring artists approaching sound from different disciplinary backgrounds, embracing both the musicological and contemporary art discourse. Artists participating are either from the South Louisiana/Gulf region, working in New Orleans, or have taken part in the May Gallery’s residency program. While the focus and impetus of the show is contemporary sound art, there are a wide range of photographic image practices employed by the artists in installations of video, projections, and still images.
Featuring: Jane Cassidy, Matthew Thompson, Justin Peake, Spencer Topel, Peter Leonard, William Thompson IV, Christopher Trapani, Generic Art Solutions, Rick Snow, Lotte Geeven, Thomas Grill, and Philippe Landry
BAMBOULA / NOLA is built on Tulane University’s recently established Sounds of Louisiana sound and field recording archives, which are part of a greater historical and architectural effort to preserve and understand various facets of the structural landscape of New Orleans. Coupled with May Gallery & Residency’s interdisciplinary approach to the curation and documentation of contemporary art in all its current and future forms, a broader discourse on sound art has been established in New Orleans. With the study of sound growing out of urban planning and architectural concerns, eventually moving into acoustic ecology and other sonic deconstructions of a given topography, BAMBOULA / NOLA should act as a bridge between sound and art, art and architecture, architecture and space, space and community.
