Throughout history, trees have been symbols of the transition of time and “the keepers” of wisdom of not only what lies behind us, but a hope for what comes in the future. In this small body of work by Ashleigh Coleman, the majestic live oak, a prevalent visual and environmental marker throughout the South, is shown through the photographer’s lens. The work was previously shown in “Majestic Visions; the Southern Live Oak” at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, MS.
In the artist’s own words:
“Often, I think about how trees have the potential to outlive humans, about how we plant trees not just for ourselves, but also for those who come after us, about how we make decisions that affect not only ourselves but also our children, about the ungovernable essence of weather and how it changes our visual landscape. Using a combination of an old, time-consuming practice of shooting medium format film and also the unpredictable medium of instant film, these works look at the magnificence of scale and the seeming stability of live oaks juxtaposed to the fleeting, mercurial nature of the weather patterns, children, and time itself.”
