Dreams in Chalk by Laura Burlton
Dreams in Chalk features Houston photographer Laura Burlton’s on-going series of dream-like images. Shooting with toy cameras and film and inspired by her own two daughters, the stories from fairytales and literature are symbolized by Laura in chalk, a fragile medium easily washed or wiped away, likened to the fragility of childhood. The fleeting moments take you to another place or time, where dreams are made and everything seems possible. Adults recall an easier time, before reality sets in and these dreams are swept away and left behind much like chalk dust left after they are erased. The images serve as a reminder to dream once again.
Child Face by Cat Thrasher
This project is an art-science collaboration between photographer Cat Thrasher and Vanessa LoBue, assistant professor of developmental psychology at Rutgers University. The pictures of 4 to 6 year old children making emotional faces were originally created for a stimulus set intended for use in scientific studies. The children in these photographs exhibit specific combinations of muscle movements that are reliably characteristic of adult displays of emotion in empirical research.
Poet’s gallery invites PhotoNOLA attendees to a casual coffee and pastry reception with the artists on the morning of Saturday, Dec 10th starting at 9am.
