PhotoNOLA 2024

Palette of Perception: Reimagining the Familiar

“Palette of Perception: Reimagining the Familiar” showcases a collection of nine images by photographer Garret DeReus, marking his debut exhibition. This series represents a exploration of color and form, transforming everyday scenes into captivating visual experiences.

DeReus, a local New Orleans civil rights attorney with a passion for photography, brings a unique perspective to his art. His background in law, which often deals with nuanced interpretations of reality, infuses his photographic work with a keen eye for reframing the ordinary.

Each image in the exhibition has undergone digital manipulation, drawing heavy inspiration from the pop-art movement. The result is a series of vibrant compositions that challenge viewers’ perceptions of familiar subjects. DeReus employs techniques such as solarization and posterization, paying homage to pop art pioneers while creating a distinctly contemporary feel.

A theme of the exhibition is the exploration of patterns. DeReus identifies and amplifies these patterns in his images through digital manipulation. This focus on repetition serves to highlight the often-overlooked rhythms and perspective that can be found in everyday surroundings.

As a first-time exhibitor, DeReus brings fresh enthusiasm to his work. His dual roles as a civil rights attorney and artist offer a unique narrative, suggesting a broader commentary on perception, justice, and the power of reframing our world view.

“Palette of Perception” not only showcases DeReus’ technical skill and artistic vision but also encourages viewers to question their own perceptions of the world around them.
