Jessica Ingram, recipient of the 2009 PhotoNOLA Review Prize, splits her time between Nashville, TN and Oakland, CA. Her series “A Civil Rights Memorial” documents sites throughout the south where Civil Rights era atrocities, Klan activities, and slave trade occurred. Ingram’s work explores the consequences of this history as it continues to reverberate in those communities and the landscape, memorializing the affected individuals and events through her images.
Darius Himes, of Radius Books, said “Her work is informed and motivated by that most significant of impulses—the desire to move forward by bearing witness to the prejudices around us. Only through setting the one in contrast to the other—the ideal against its antithesis—can progress be made. In this sense, her work is educational, both socially and spiritually. It is a supremely important project.”
