NEW ORLEANS BEYOND TOMORROW: Community, Culture, Commerce
December 11, 2018 – January 8, 2019
Opening: Thursday, Dec 13, 5-9pm, with Artists’ Discussion at 6pm
In NEW ORLEANS BEYOND TOMORROW: Community, Culture, Commerce, the Ashé Creative Team invites artists to imagine the next 300 years. This open call seeks photographic works to be submitted via email by November 24, 2018.
About
The New Orleans Tricentennial brings with it opportunities for reflection. During the Tricentennial celebrations of 2018, we invite artists to step outside their day to day realities and play in the field of imagination. Over the next 300 years, New Orleans is poised for transformation, an evolution of community led by culture and creativity. The best way to change the future is to create it.
Going forward, what will the next 300 years look like?
Ashé Executive Director Carol Bebelle: Curatorial Statement
We invite artists to submit photos that imagine the next 300 years not from where we currently are as a society, rather the future from where we need to go. Our goal is to create a space where we are imagining what could be, inside of the philosophical, anthropological, metaphysical, and what we can make happen along the way.
We encourage artists to consider the following questions:
1) As we move into the next 300 years, how can culture and creativity combine to create progress?
2) Over the next 300 years, how can we create a future that is inclusive and equitable for all?
3) How can we ensure the diversity of cultures found in New Orleans is reflected in both the design and development of the city?
4) How can culture be a catalyst for community and commerce?
5) Consider the future to its best potential—what would it look like?
The mere dreaming of a thing begins the making. A dream without a plan however lives only in fantasy. Future trail blazers and pioneers begin with a vision and then continue with the on-going practice of making things happen. Consider this Ashé exhibition theninitiation of the beginning steps for the next 300 years of where we need to go.
