Movement and Purpose
Parker Stevenson and Christy Lee Rogers
December 1-31, 2017
Opening: Saturday, Dec 9, 6 -9pm
Graphite Galleries in the French Quarter is honored to present a startling juxtaposition of new works by artists Parker Stevenson and Christy Lee Rogers. Vivacious in movement and purpose, both artists capture the hope and vulnerability of the human condition in their own unique way.
Christy Lee Rogers is a visual artist, originally from Kailua, Hawaii. Her obsession with water as a medium for breaking the conventions of contemporary photography has led to her work being compared to Baroque painting masters like Caravaggio. Boisterous in color and complexity, Rogers applies her cunning photographic technique to a barrage of bodies submerged in water during the night. Rogers’ works have been exhibited internationally from Paris, London, Italy, Mexico City to Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Los Angeles and more, and are held in private and public collections throughout the world.
Most recently, Rogers is exhibiting at the Palazzo Bembo Collateral Exhibition during the 57th Venice Art Biennale. She has been featured in international magazines, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Art China, Elle Decoration, Global Times, The Independent, Casa Vogue, Photo Technique, Photo Korea and others. Rogers’ “Reckless Unbound”is currently housed at Longleat House in the UK; the stately home, which is the seat of the Marquesses of Bath and also home to Renaissance gems of the Italian masters, like Titan’s “Rest on the Flight into Egypt”. Rogers’ art has been featured on several album covers, and in 2013, her images were selected for the 2013–2014 performance season of the Angers-Nantes Opera in France. Although she mainly still shoots in Hawaii, Rogers currently lives in Nashville, where she also spends her time as a mother, filmmaker and musician.
Parker Stevenson is a graduate of Princeton University with a dual study BFA degree in Art & Archaeology/Architecture. He has been shooting and printing since his early teens when his professional photography career began with wedding event commissions at age 13. He has been devotedly shooting ever since. The emotional resonances of form, color, and composition are his focus.
An extension of Parker’s Photography has been his involvement in Acting, Directing, and Producing Film and Television over the last fifty years. He explains, “The only way to truly know me, is to see me thru my images.” Parker currently lives and works in Venice, CA.
