December 9, 2017 – January 7, 2018
Opening: Saturday, December 9, 2017, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Gallery Talk at 7pm with International Photographer Jose Fernandes of C+J on documenting the Other and the necessity of working in close collaboration with artist cross social and cultural lines.
Artist owned and run, contemporary art gallery, Eight One Eight, features the latest politically charged diptychs of married artistic duo C+J (Cecelia+Jose Fernandes).
“Insentient Objects: Capitalism, Commodification and Catharsis,” cast a critical eye on social/political power structures and dictatorial binary narratives that shape Western life and give rise to calls for social justice in present day.
Through the use of documentary photography in diptych compositions, “Insentient Objects” explores lines of connectivity—some in clear demarcations of separation, some in forming new structures, others flowing fluidly in continuity while many are virtually seamless, obscured in darkness.
How are we navigating our politics of everyday life? Is the marketing of indigenous cultures and social justice movements an act of representation, appropriation, or violence? Are we activist or complacent, finding release in “like” clicks and petition signing? If so, where is the true resistance?
