Hands Around the World
Let us celebrate one another. Let us celebrate the things we have in common, as well as the things that make us unique.
For World Cyanotype Day 2017, Shootapalooza and the A Smith Gallery invited people all over the world to create cyanotype portraits of their hands, to symbolically join us together in love and support. Artists from as far away as Norway heeded the call, sending more than 125 flags to Johnson City, Texas. Strung together, the flags symbolize unity, peace, and tranquility.
Hands Around the World includes work by Pat Brown, Michael Butts, Kimberly Chiaris, Amy Jasek, Donna Moore, Vicki Reed, DorRae Stevens, Melanie Walker, Db Dennis Waltrip and many more.
The exhibition premiered at the A Smith Gallery on September 30 (World Cyanotype Day), and now travels to New Orleans where it will hang throughout the Healing Center during PhotoNOLA.
About the New Orleans Healing Center
The New Orleans Healing Center is a community center whose purpose and operating principles are based on United Nations guidelines for sustainability. It is structured to be able to simultaneously help, heal, and empower individuals and surrounding neighborhoods at the economic, social, environmental, physical/mental, and spiritual levels.
It does this by providing a base for small businesses and organizations to cater to the community, on the corner of St Claude and St Roch. That’s why all of the businesses that are part of the healing center must agree to a Credo that mandates a strong element of social responsibility and entrepreneurship.
More than just a physical building, the New Orleans Healing Center is a pioneering social/civic enterprise that provides a sustainable framework and guidance for individuals and communities to help each other, and above all, themselves.
