God’s Country
December 5, 2016 – January 7, 2017
Opening: Saturday, Dec 10, 6-9pm
God’s Country is a collective exploration of Louisiana’s frontiers by Southerly Gold, an ensemble of three female photographers —Aubrey Edwards, Ariya Martin, Elena Ricci— living and working in New Orleans. Following the historic trail of desire for Southern Utopia, this work is a landscape-based photographic survey of the promises and resources that the farthest reaches of the state have held for man. From agriculture to oil, from land to sea.
These images were shot in the six delineated points of intersection of the border of Louisiana: Caddo Parish, East & West Carroll Parish, Cameron Parish, West Feliciana Parish, and Plaquemines Parish. Each region held a specific theme and direction rooted in historical research and local oral history collection. Specific film cameras were used in each parish to best interpret the landscapes’ narrative; these included: 8×10, 4×5, three types of medium format, 35 mm and Polaroid.
