Esther Murphy:(我的) Rotten Mandarin

(我的) Rotten Mandarin, is an open studio event featuring recent work by Esther Murphy. In 2016-17, Murphy photographed the immediate surroundings of her apartment building in Shenzhen, China. As with previous bodies of work, Murphy explores themes relating to culture and language through her lens as a foreigner.
Bio:
Esther Murphy, b. 1984, is a native of New Orleans. She received her MFA from Washington University in Saint Louis in 2011 and BFA from Loyola University New Orleans in 2006. After receiving her MFA she immediately moved to Bozeman, Montana where she taught photography at Montana State University in The School of Film and Photography. In 2013 she attended residencies at the The Banff Centre. In 2015 she moved to Frankfurt, Germany, where she maintained her studio practice out of her apartment. Later that fall semester, she completed a teaching residency at Oregon College of Art and Craft. During 2016 to 2017, she lived and worked in Shenzhen, China as the photography and video teacher at a brand new art college preparatory school. She has exhibited her work locally and nationally, in solo, group, and juried shows.
Having recently returned to the states, she is working from her studio in New Orleans.
