Cig Harvey Lecture

Cig Harvey - Emie In The Truck
Cig Harvey – Emie In The Truck

Cig Harvey Lecture
Lecture & Book Signing: Sunday, Dec 13, 11:30am
THNOC Williams Research Center
Free and open to the public

Cig Harvey’s narrative photographs are celebrated for their luminous color, natural light, and lush scenery. While drawing on traditions of portraiture and landscape, Harvey exceeds the conventions of these genres, using metaphor and symbol to explore personal identity and the concept of home. “Story telling has always been the primary inspiration for my pictures,” Harvey has said, adding, “They explore a magic in the world while having one foot very much placed in reality.”

In this lecture Cig Harvey will present selections from various projects, sharing the stories behind the images and insights into her work and process.

Cig Harvey - The Surf Trip, Rockport, Maine, 2012
Cig Harvey - The Goldfinch, St. Petersburg, Russia, 2014
Cig Harvey - Dasha's Hair, St. Petersburg, Russia, 2015
Cig Harvey - The Fall Table, Rockport, Maine, 2013

BIO
The photographs and artist books of Cig Harvey have been widely exhibited and remain in the permanent collections of major museums and collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; the Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, Maine; and the International Museum of Photography and Film at the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York. She was recently nominated for the John Gutmann fellowship and a finalist of the BMW Prize at Paris Photo and the Prix Virginia, an international photography prize for women. Cig had her first solo museum show at the Stenersen Museum in Oslo, Norway, in the spring of 2012 in conjunction with the release of her monograph, You Look At Me Like An Emergency (Schilt Publishing, 2012). Her second book, Gardening At Night, was released in the spring of 2015. Cig’s devotion to visual storytelling has lead to innovative international campaigns and features with New York Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar Japan, Kate Spade, and Bloomingdales. Cig teaches workshops and regularly speaks on her work and processes at institutions around the world. She is known for her high energy, sense of humor and creativity. Cig lives in a farmhouse in Maine with her husband Doug, their daughter Scout, and Scarlet the dog.

In partnership with Octavia Books, copies of Gardening at Night will be available for purchase, and Cig will sign books after her presentation.

Books can be ordered in advance and picked up at the event, or signed and shipped elsewhere. Please note in the “order comments” field at the bottom of the form that you will be picking the book up at the lecture, or if you cannot attend that you would like it to be signed by Cig then mailed after the event.
