Artist Statement:
In the spring of 2015 my parents and I made a trip to Shanghai, where my father was born and raised and where I spent most of the first six years of my life. This trip was the first time I met Shanghai since then, as an adult.
After Shanghai my father and I took the train to Chengdu, a much older city, more ancient but equally wracked by the forces of development, and my birthplace. My aunt took us to what seemed the only spot of green in the city, a park/temple annex where chickens roamed and old men took their caged birds out to air. My mother gave an improvised guided tour of the places of her childhood, but my picture taking interfered with my ability to properly listen, and so I caught only the phrase, “During the revolution two students exploded themselves beneath those trees…” – Chen Gu
