WHERE – A special curatorial collaboration for PROSPECT.3 from The Collection of A Gallery for Fine Photography (founded 1973). The Exhibit is an opportunity to view 49 of the greatest classical and contemporary photographs in the world.
“Where” is a powerful word. It is invoked whenever we explain our own origins (“this is where I’m from”), it is used when we express our own ambitions (“I hope to go where I can make a difference”), and it is used to define our identities and the identities of others. Photography, from its very origins, was linked to all these variations of “where.” Photographs are, after all, records of places: tangible documents of the spaces in which they were created. As a result, photographs from anywhere can migrate almost everywhere. Including photographs from places as disparate as Outer Space and The Amazon, WHERE demonstrates how pervasive the flow of photography has become in the modern world. At the same time, it raises questions about what photographs can tell us about “where.”
