PhotoNOLA is proud to present Smoking Log, by Jane Fulton Alt, as our 2018 Collectors Club Print.
Jane Fulton Alt is an American photographer who explores issues of love, loss, and spirituality in her work. ‘Smoking Log’ is from The Burn, a long-term project that she began in 2007 after observing her first controlled prairie burn. In her words: “A controlled burn is deliberately set; its violent, destructive force reduces invasive vegetation so that native plants can continue to prosper. The elements of the burn—the mysterious luminosity, the smoke that both obscures and reveals—suggest a liminal space, a zone of ambiguity where destruction merges with renewal.” The images of regenerative destruction constitute a universal metaphor: the ephemeral moment when life and death are not opposed but are harmonized as a single process to be embraced as one.
“To witness and photograph a controlled burn is to place oneself in the presence of a certain ‘terrible beauty’… Fire and smoke are my equivalents; abstract manifestations of an inner state where the unknowable resides.” – Jane Fulton Alt
The limited edition of 100 (plus five artist proofs) is an archival pigment print, featuring an 8×8” image on 12×10” hot press, cotton rag paper. Each print is signed and numbered by the artist. The Smoking Log is a new addition to Alt’s series, and is being offered for the first time in this exclusive edition for PhotoNOLA.
