Statement:
Mississippi comes from the native Ojibwe words gichi-ziibi and misi-ziibi, meaning Big River and Great River.
Big River is a series shot entirely on the banks of the Mississippi River in 5 different areas of the Greater New Orleans region over 3 months. It comprises portraits, landscape imagery and still life of found objects, together giving its audience an understanding of a community and culture depending and thriving on the river. Over the past 12 years, Edwards has visited, photographed, taught and lost a family member to violence within Orleans Parish. Edwards has finally moved to New Orleans full time, and continues to examine her complicated relationship with the city; Big River is a study of her new home, her new life, and the river that runs through them.
