In nearly four decades photographing in Louisiana, Philip Gould has found fascination with that common ground where landscape and culture meet. In this lush, soggy terrain where nature seems to have the last word, the hand of man still has tremendous impact. People manifest cultural expression, spontaneously and naturally, as if from Louisiana’s grass roots. We impact the landscape and, in
abstract and very real ways, it nourishes us.
Based in Lafayette, Philip Gould has photographed throughout the state, the south, the nation and beyond. His work has been published in over a dozen books on Louisiana as well as various periodicals from around the world. His photography has become one of the largest privately-held photographic archives on the Bayou State. His latest book Acadiana with text by Carl Brasseaux was published by LSU Press in May of 2011.
