AN INTRODUCTION TO TRAVELING EXHIBITIONS
In this opening session, Mary Virginia Swanson will provide participants with an overview of the role of an exhibition in one’s career, selecting appropriate venues/presentation style, and the importance of related educational programs to serve the venue’s community. Her visual presentation will include of a diverse range of exhibition installation views, language of wall copy, and more. She will address compiling related materials to present to targeted venues, including defining the elements of an exhibition, costs to present/tour shows and current traveling exhibition practices.
Lori Waselchuk’s “GRACE BEFORE DYING” project will be featured as our Case Study. With both a fine art and a community version of her exhibition, Waselchuk reaches a broad audience in appropriate venues that can manage the installation (both literally, and financially). The exhibition’s website will be reviewed as an important marketing tool, and Swanson will also discuss the value an accompanying trade publication of the same name to support the on-going tour of Waselchuk’s exhibition(s).

Each panelist will share a ten-minute visual presentation, informing the audience about the photography exhibitions program at their institution from both a curatorial and financial perspective. A moderated discussion, led by Q&A from the audience, will follow. Participants can expect to gain insights into funding and production realities, effective ways to “pitch” an exhibition to an institution and a broader understanding of the artist/venue/audience relationship.
