Sirens, sea-dwelling nymphs who sing so enchantingly that they lure sailors off-course, are the subject of Christy Rogers’ collection: SIREN, wherein the Hawaiian born artist pays tribute to these mysterious and mythical creatures. The collection’s origin lies in Rogers’ experiments with spatial relationships that over time developed into these austere, unique portraits. Rogers sought out to create a sanctuary for the viewer, a place separate from the intrusions and chaos of the world where she could give voice to nuanced, mysterious feelings, those too elusive to reduce into words.

Rogers’ figures represent something internal and widely experienced. She successfully and intelligently depicts the wordless doubts and dreams that all of humanity is heir to. Beneath the wondrous exterior, at their core, these strange figures are more human than human; their souls are bared and radiant to one and all.

Her neo figurative approach to image making is achieved using simple physics, involving the refraction and reflection of light through water. Creating all of her images in-camera and without post-production manipulation, each image involves extensive experimentation using the elements of light, water, color and movement.
