The Ins and Outs of Photographic Archives – Mary Engel, APAG (American Photographic Archives Group)

Join Mary Engel, founder and president of the American Photography Archives Group (APAG) in this one-hour talk on the ins and outs of photographic archives.

APAG is an organization to support photographer’s archives, working photographers, and photographic archivists and its mission is to help to preserve, document and exhibit historic photography of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Mary Engel

Engel has been the director of the Ruth Orkin Photo Archive since its inception in 1985. She is responsible for all aspects of managing the archive including sales, licensing, marketing, legal issues, preservation and social media. Engel works with photography galleries, museums and auction houses in the United States and abroad. She has published four catalogs of photography.

Engel’s first film “Ruth Orkin: Frames of Life” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1996, and went on to screen at many other festivals. The film was selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as one of the “Outstanding Documentaries of 1996.” Her film “Morris Engel: The Independent” premiered on Turner Classic Movies, TCM in 2009. Engel is also a contributing producer of “Ordinary Miracles: The Photo League’s New York” released in 2011.

She has recently participated on panels at POWarts and Photoville, and has lectured at Harvard University, New York University, Brooklyn Historical Society, St. Louis Art Museum, Central Park Conservancy, and has appeared at the Avon Theater, (Stamford, CT), Loews Jersey (Jersey City, NJ) Film Forum (New York, NY) and the Egyptian Theater (Park City, Utah). She has been published in The New York Times, the American Society of Media Photographers magazine, Photo District News and Film Comment.

Engel is the 2017 recepient of the Griffin Museum of Photography – Focus Spotlight Award. She also completed the 2017 Seminar on Strategy for Artist-Endowed Foundation Leaders presented by the Aspen Institute Artist-Endowed Foundations Initiative (AEFI).

Here is how PhotoLEARN works: register for an in-person pass and you will have your choice of attending one, live mini-workshop to attend in the morning, which includes Working with Galleries – an anecdotal workshop (Frish Brandt and Constance Lewis), Editing and Sequencing Your Work (Benjamin Hickey and Richard Sexton) and Historic Photographic Processes and Their Application Today (Mallory Taylor and James O’Connell)

PLUS – you will have archived recording access to all three mini-workshops once the videos are edited and made ready.

In addition, you will be able to attend, two more in-person events in the afternoon:  this one with Mary Engel and Panel: Community and Collaboration Through Uncertain Times featuring various industry experts. These will also be recorded for archive viewing at a later date.

Make an entire day of it or attend just one and review the recordings later.

Virtual Registration:

For out-of-towners, you can purchase access to PhotoLEARN, which includes this talk. Here is how it will work: you will have archival video access to all 5 events for PhotoLEARN, plus live Zoom access to Mary Engel’s talk and to the Panel Discussion in the afternoon.

Fee:

$150 Regular / $125 NOPA Members

The cost to attend is the same for in-person and virtual and includes archival access to all 5 events for one, low price. All net proceeds go to the non-profit New Orleans Photo Alliance.
