Live in the Zeitgeist Lounge
Bruce Sunpie Barnes is a New Orleans musician, former park ranger with the National Park Service, actor, photographer, book author, former high school biology teacher, former college football All-American, and former NFL player (Kansas City Chiefs). Sunpie Barnes’ many careers have taken him far and wide. He has traveled to over 53 countries playing his own style of what he calls Afro-Louisiana music incorporating blues, zydeco, gospel, Caribbean and African influenced rhythms and melodies. He is a multi-instrumentalist, mastering accordion, harmonica, and piano along with rubboard, talking drum, and dejembe. He learned accordion from some of the best Zydeco pioneers in Louisiana, including Fernest Arceneaux, John Delafose, and Clayton Sampy. Along with his musical group Sunpie and the Louisiana Sunspots, he has performed at festivals and concerts across the US and around the globe. Sunpie has recorded 7 critically acclaimed CDs with his compositions currently featured in 16 Hollywood film productions.
In addition to this musical work he is also a former member of the Paul Simon Band that embarked on a 58 city world tour “Paul Simon and Sting Together”, which span 36 countries (2014,15 and 16). In 2018 Latin Super Star Carlos Vives invited Sunpie along with the Louisiana Sunspots perform with him at the 51st annual Vallenato Festival in Valledupar, Colombia.

Mary Engel
Mary Engel is an award winning filmmaker, director of the Orkin/Engel Film and Photo Archive, and founder of the American Photography Archives Group.
Mary Engel has been the director of the Ruth Orkin Photo Archive since its inception in 1985. She is responsible for all aspects of managing the archive including sales, licensing, marketing, legal issues, preservation and social media. Engel works with photography galleries, museums and auction houses in the United States and abroad. She has published four catalogs of photography. Mary recently wrote the introduction and served as co-editor on Ruth Orkin: A Photo Spirit, published in 2021.
Ruth Orkin: Frames of Life – premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1996, and went on to screen at many other festivals. The film was selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as one of the “Outstanding Documentaries of 1996.”
Jane Fulton Alt – and Jeff Phillips
Jane and Jeff will be in attendance and available for Q&A
Jane is a visual artist, author, and internationally published photographer who resides in both New Orleans and Evanston, Illinois. She received her B. A. from the University of Michigan and her M. A. from the University of Chicago. Her distinguished accolades are extensive.
Jeff Phillips is a media artist based in Chicago. He is interested in non-traditional ways of making and presenting work, including zinemaking, digital projection, and VR exhibition spaces. Jeff serves on the boards of directors for Filter Photo and New Orleans Photo Alliance.
Land of Dreams – Reflects upon the persistence of memory, flowing from a deep well of love, longing, and grief. The film is a Jane Fulton Alt and Jeff Phillips collaboration.
Matt S Bell
Matt S. Bell was born and raised in the heart of Louisiana where he began his career as a photographer before moving into motion pictures.
After graduating with a BFA in Photography, he began his career as a cinematographer with several notable network and independent feature projects. Matt has since developed a portfolio of more than 25 films including Santa Jaws(Syfy), A Day in the Life of America(Paradox, Jared Leto), The Requin(Saban Entertainment), and many more.
In the future, Matt plans on expanding his growing career as a cinematographer to include directing.
Ryker -Kai Ryker (Jeff Pearson) suddenly wakes up in an abandoned junk yard covered in scraps and dried blood with no memory of what brought him there. Only with the discovery of a recent memory is Kai able to unveil any sense from the situation.
Nathan Tape
Nathan will be in attendance and available for Q&A
Nathan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Loyola University in New Orleans in 2002, and obtained his Master’s Degree in Film Production in 2006 from Loyola Marymount Los Angeles.
As a filmmaker, Nathan’s tells stories about outsiders on the fringes of society. With his background in photography and music, his films have a strong visual style and exhibit a strong connection to music.
After school, Nathan returned to Louisiana and began working in the lighting department on major Hollywood productions, soon graduating to becoming a Gaffer for films and television (Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Night Teeth, Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger).
Moriah – In the 70’s in the Deep South, an estranged son is violently reunited with his father against his will. Sometimes, we all need a little Mercy.
Fern Nesson
Fern will be in attendance and available for Q&A
Fern L. Nesson is a fine art photographer who lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She received her MFA in Photography from Maine Media College (2018), a J.D. from Harvard Law School (1971), and an M.A. in American History (Brandeis University 1987).
Fern’s spare photographs distill reality to its essence, highlighting its energy through the use of form and abstraction. In the past four years, she has had solo exhibitions in Torino, Italy, at Les Rencontres D’Arles, at the MIT Museum, at the Beacon Gallery in Boston, and at Through This Lens Gallery in Durham, NC. Additionally, her work has been selected for numerous juried exhibitions in the U.S., Barcelona, Rome and Budapest. She will have a solo show at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Boston this spring.
Fern’s photobooks, Signet of Eternity and WORD received the 10th and the 12th Annual Photobooks Award from the Davis-Orton Gallery. She is represented in New England by the Beacon Gallery.
All Here All Now – Einstein said the difference between past, present and future is an illusion. The images in this film are all about the nature of time. Each contains within it traces of the past and hints of the future.
The Mind of God – This film examines and evokes the parallels between theoretical mathematics and abstract photography. The soundtrack is a digital sonification of the Mars Voyager expedition made by a British physics professor, Domenico Vicinanza and used with his permission.
L’Invitation Au Voyage – Baudelaire’s most famous, and arguably most beautiful romantic poem, is the subject of this film. Read first by a French speaker and then in a translation (done by me), the film examines the art of translation in both text and image. Using a form of abstraction in each sphere makes the poem come alive for non-French readers.
Rhythm of My Soul – This film seeks parallels between harmony and rhythm in mathematics and abstract photography. The soundtrack is of Japanese taiko drums.
Christopher Ryan
Christopher will be in attendance and available for Q&A
Christopher is an international conceptual photographer based in New Orleans. His unique series of works have been produced in over 20 countries and exhibited throughout USA and Thailand. Currently his solo exhibition “Lord of the Flies – Thailand” is being held at Zeitgeist Theatre & Lounge and available for viewing during the closing party.
A Colorful Boy – Explores the theme of a colorless world and finding inspiration through the innocence and imaginative minds of children.
