George Dureau: Photographs
George Dureau
October 23, 2021-January 23, 2022
Opening: October 23, 2021
New Orleans artist George Dureau photographed a diversity of people in postures that speak to his keen eye, as well as the trust he developed with his models — many of whom were Black, and/or had amputations, or physical disabilities. Dureau was passionate about elevating and capturing the beauty of the people he photographed, looking both to classical Greco-Roman archetypes, and everyday life in the city. P.5 curator Grace Deveney presents a selection of Dureau’s photographs that speak to the strengths of his practice, as well as suggesting the depth of the relationships he cultivated with the people he photographed, by including multiple images of some of his frequent models. The presentation will also show lesser-known works taken in the French Quarter, at Lake Pontchartrain, and in other places across the city, revealing aspects of life outside the studio.
