Since 1993 “Structure Out of Chaos” has been following the saga of chronically homeless people living in non-traditional dwellings. The documentary is a paradox. It is a survey of the homeless, in their homes. These are shelters created out of discarded objects, abandoned buildings, vehicles, tunnels, or even tents. This series chronicles people organizing their lives while navigating the obstacles of survival.
The goal is to bring the conversation about homelessness away from the people entrenched in the issue and into mainstream discourse. To achieve this plan, portraits are created where the models are aware of the camera and involved in the message. It opens the door for the outside world to come in and visit. The desire is to shift our awareness from criminalizing people towards addressing the issues creating their plight.
Until we understand and accept responsibility for our vulnerable neighbors we are doomed to witness old cycles repeat as this epidemic continues to grow. It will take a massive shift in consciousness to prevent and end American Homeless yet this series strives towards that goal.
