In Rooms 2014-2018: From the Studio of Brittany Markert
Step inside the home and studio of artist Brittany Markert to view the complete photographic project In Rooms. This exhibit includes silver gelatin prints, contact sheets, props and a walkthrough set reminiscent of the artist’s imaginative world, offering a glimpse into the mind of the artist.
Brittany created In Rooms to continue a dialogue with predecessors of the surrealist art movement and early self-portrait photography on topics such as desire, identity and the subconscious from the perspective from a woman. In a field dominated by male voices and the male gaze, Brittany reclaims the power of the female body and mind through her intimate and intentional lens. For five years the artist committed herself to the creation of art, investigating her inner dialogue, societal shadows and the minds of her subjects, confronting mental health, societal shadows and the collective unconscious. In the spirit of a personal diary, the work has been published in chronological order into two monographs.
In Rooms Gallery is proud to open its doors to the public for the first time and invite you to view and participate with this body of work.
Brittany will present an artist talk at St. Peter & Paul Cathedral – 4:30pm on Thursday, Dec 12. Tickets are available for purchase through the artist’s website. After the lecture audience members are invited to join Brittany at In Rooms Gallery nearby for a personal viewing of her silver gelatin prints.
Bio:
Brittany Markert (b.1987, USA) is a traditional black and white photographer, darkroom printer, bookmaker & educator. From the school of surrealism, early experimental film and the photographic works of Claude Cahun, Francesca Woodman and Duane Michals, to name a few, her photographic project In Rooms was created as an ongoing narrative to explore themes of mental health, our inner dialogue, sexuality and gender identity. In Rooms has been exhibited in the USA, France, Denmark, & Belgium including Brandts Museum & The Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Her silver gelatin prints, each handmade by the artist, are held in private collections in 20 countries across the globe. In 2017 Brittany broadened her focus to lecturing, curating & 16mm filmmaking to further a discussion on mental health, queer identity & Jungian shadow work.
