Pioneers to a WE Future

Opening: Friday, December 8, 2017, 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The first hour of the opening is reserved for viewing. All Ashé spaces will be open–attendees will have opportunities to meet and chat with artists as they view the exhibition. The discussion begins at 7pm. The discussion will be held in the Ashé Main Side.

Ashé Executive Director Carol Bebelle: Curatorial Statement

“Every dream begins with a dreamer, “Harriet Tubman

Arising and closely aligned with Ashé ‘s ongoing commitment to offering spaces for work that connects and furthers truth of racial representation, racial reconciliation, racial healing and transformation, we invite artists to submit photos that imagine a future not from where we currently are as a society, rather the future from where we need to go. Our goal is to create a space where we are imagining what could be, inside of the philosophical, anthropological, metaphysical, and what we can make happen along the way.
We encourage artists to consider the following questions:
1) How do we grow a stronger We culture?
2) How do we improve the quality of life for everybody?
3) How can we live a different way now in order to make change happen?
4) How do we develop a We voice so that everyone can develop their dreams?
5) Consider an alternate reality to its best potential—what would it look like?

The mere dreaming of a thing begins the making. A dream without a plan however lives only in fantasy. Future trail blazers and pioneers begin with a vision and then continue with the on-going practice of making things happen. Consider this Ashé exhibition the initiation of the beginning steps of where we need to go.

We will be using the follow in format for the discussion:
*The Curators will be introduced and will share Ashé Executive Director Carol Bebelle’s inspiration for the exhibition
*Each artist will be introduced and share about the inspiration for their work(s) and/or their process
*The floor will be opened for a Q and A with the audience
*Following the discussion, audience members will have opportunities to speak with artists individually and view work
