Course Objective
Through the Power of Three, students learn what it means to build a consistent body of work. Minkkinen will guide students to discover a pathway option in their portfolio (or response to an assignment) that leads to a meeting of images and minds. Thorough picture analysis and feedback is essential to identify such pathways, to see commonalities in images as much as their departures. Rarely is the photographer the best person to determine if an image achieves the conundrum: make it different; keep it the same.
Who Should Apply
The New Orleans Photo Alliance is delighted to offer this free workshop to the New Orleans community free of charge. This workshop is intended for experienced, as well as up-and-coming photographers who are seeking guidance on developing a personal vision. Participants are expected to have a good understanding of the general operations of their cameras. Laptops will be needed and students should be familiar with their hardware and software in order to facilitate downloading and review of photos. If that’s you, please apply for a workshop space here.
Class preparation
Participants must bring a portfolio of ten photographic prints, laptop, and camera.
About the instructor
Arno Rafael Minkkinen is the PhotoNOLA 2016 Keynote speaker. A Finnish-American photographer noted for his unmanipulated nude self-portraits in the landscape, Minkkinen was born in Helsinki in 1945, he moved with his family to America in 1951. Raised in Brooklyn, NY, he later attended Wagner College on Staten Island, majoring in English. After five years in the advertising business, he discovered photography working on the Minolta camera account. “What happens inside your mind can happen inside a camera,” was the turning-point headline he wrote in 1970. A year later, studying with John Benson at the Apeiron Workshops in Millerton, NY, he began his self-portrait work.
He received his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design, studying with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Currently, he is a professor of Art & Design Helsinki and École d’Art Appliqués in Vevey, Switzerland. Minkkinen is the recipient of many awards including the 2013 Lucie Award for Achievement in Fine Art, the 2015 John Simon Guggenheim Award, and the Memorial Foundation Fellowship. He is represented by the Edwynn Houk Gallery.
