Dorothy O’Connor: Scenes
October 3 – December 31, 2015
Opening: Saturday, Oct 3, 6-8pm
PhotoNOLA Opening: Saturday, Dec 12, 6-9pm
Dorothy O’Connor’s ongoing series, “Scenes,” centers around transforming spaces into fantastical landscapes which frequently utilize elements of nature to tell a story. Each concept, shaped predominantly by events in the artist’s own life, creates a conceptual autobiography. Building the life-sized installations also allows her to live inside her own imagination, and to construct a more aesthetically pleasing reality. Each project takes months to complete, in which O’Connor fully immerses herself in its meticulous details. She creates many of the components in each set by hand: crocheting the ocean, crafting hundreds of paper birds, weaving a ceiling of roots from jute, etc. The scenes are ultimately captured on film and the photographs remain as the lasting imprint.
