The 70th Annual POYi Photojournalism Competition
Pictures of the Year International is the oldest and most prestigious photojournalism program in the world. Each year, magazine, newspaper, and freelance photographers around the world document the news events, political trends, and social issues that capture our interest and demand our attention. Since 1944, POYi’s annual competition continues to honor these professional photojournalists and sets the gold standard for excellence.

This exhibition features award winning images from the 2013 competition. On Sunday, December 15th, Rick Shaw will lead an exhibition walk through beginning at 12:30pm. The event is free and open to the public.

During the 2013 contest judging in February, the jury panel reviewed more than 52,000 images submitted in 50 categories ranging from General News, to Sports, to Portrait, to Issue Reporting. Premier categories honor two “Photographer of the Year” portfolios, plus several documentary photography awards for extended, in-depth projects. A panel of prestigious visual journalists serves as judges during a three-week review at the Missouri School of Journalism, presenting 268 awards for photography, photo editing, and multimedia.

The mission of POYi is to empower the world’s best documentary photography to provide a visual portrayal of society and foster an understanding of the issues facing our civilization. POYi extends the reach of photojournalists by providing pubic educational exhibitions, promoting professional development, and cultivating its vast 39,000-image POYi Archive of historic photographs for academic and citizen outreach.

Now in its 70th year, this POYi exhibition serves as a historical mirror on our society that goes beyond journalistic representation and pays tribute to all working photojournalists worldwide.

POYi is a program of the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism. POYi and the Reynolds Journalism Institute embrace a shared interest to join citizens and journalists in programs that improve the practice and understanding of journalism.
