The PhotoBOOK Fair returns in-person on Friday, December 9, 12-4:30 pm in the historic library space at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. This event offers you the chance to peruse a beautiful array of contemporary photobooks & zines, and engage with the artists and publishers who created them.
Join us for book signings and programs throughout the day. This event is free and open to the public!

- 12:15: Jimmy Fike discusses his book Edible Plants
- Related to his photography series spanning fifteen years, Fike has traveled across the country finding and photographing wild edible plants.
- 12:30: Robbie McClaran on self publishing limited edition artist books
- 12:45: Donald Maginnis on his self-published titles
- 1:00 pm: Justin Fiset in conversation with Andrew Fedynak on his book, Six Cinder Blocks on Top of a Wall
- A brief Q/A with the publisher about the artist’s creative reasons behind photographing this West Los Angeles alleyway typology, and how the collaborative design process led to the finished photobook. The event will be live streamed on Zatara Press’s Instagram Account.
- 1:30 pm: How the Sausage is Made: A Conversation with Fall Line Press
- The process of publishing a photobook involves much more than collecting images. With over ten years of experience and much more as an artist and photobook enthusiast, William will speak about everything that goes into creating fine art photo books. The process can take well over a year, with multiple editing sessions, meetings at the studio to speak about design, promotion of the work, funding, editing and writing, and overall effectiveness in representing the artist and Fall Line Press. Clay Maxwell Jordan, an accomplished photographer, and artist living in Athens, Georgia, joins William on the panel. Clay published his monograph Nothing’s Coming Soon with Fall Line Press in 2019, cultivating a friendship with William. He is now a senior editor with the publishing company. With the addition of Clay to the panel, he will be able to speak to how the process goes from the photographer’s side. Creating a compelling photobook is a marriage of exciting work and a trusting relationship between the artist and the editor. This panel is set to be a fantastic look behind the curtain of what it takes from idea to fruition of beautiful photobook publications.
- 2:15 pm: Deconstructed Photo Books with Louie Palu
- Washington DC based photographer Louie Palu will share his working process from concept to publication of his photo books that can be taken apart and re-edited by the reader or hung as a pop-up exhibition. His award-winning books include FRONT TOWARDS ENEMY (2017, Yoffy Press) and multiple zines. Palu is a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow, his photographs and books are held in numerous collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, National Gallery of Art, Center of Creative Photography and Smithsonian American History Museum. In 2022 his work was selected for a World Press Photo Award for his long-term project Political Year Zero.
- 2:45: David Rae Morris discusses his book Love, Daddy
- Love, Daddy: Letters from My Father examines the complexities of father-and-son relationships through letters and photographs. Willie Morris wrote scores of letters to his only son, David Rae Morris, from the mid-1970s until Willie’s death in 1999. Morris will discuss how the project came to be over a 15 year period.
- 3:00 pm: Jon Horvath discusses his book This Is Bliss
- This Is Bliss is a transmedia narrative project investigating the vanishing roadside geography and culture of a rural Idaho town named Bliss. The project considers how mythologies of place and happiness collide, and are frequently confounded, in a location with a complex narrative of booms and busts that reflects the complicated history of American Idealism and Manifest Destiny. All that remains in Bliss is two gas stations, a school, a church, a diner, and two saloons to service its 300 current residents
- 3:30: Conversation on LIFE photographers Gordon Parks and Bud Lee
- Lisa Volpe and Chris Campion will compare the work of LIFE photographers Gordon Parks and Bud Lee. LIFE assigned both men to cover major events in 1966 and 1967 as the civil rights movement was changing, and the tenor of LIFE’s images covering the movement was shifting. This discussion will uncover both photographers’ editorial approaches and point of view.
