PhotoNOLA 2024

The Unknowns

Some of us have grandparents and maybe even great grandparents.

Some of us are clueless about our elders and their history. Never knowing my grandparents or any of my elders, creates a multitude of made up memories and dreams.

I do have a box full of family photos, so I do know what my grandparents looked like, but I never knew them. Not their laugh, smell or what they loved, just emptiness. The images are of people I do not know, or how they connect to my elders… I added a few images of places or things, trying to connect the dots somehow.

The Unknowns is a solo show by Leona Strassberg Steiner at the Bywater Fine Art Printing Studio. Works include image transfers, cyanotypes and giclee prints.

Steiner is a visual artist living and working in New Orleans since 2014. Her work is a focal point for exploring the beauty and significance of natural environments, and the human condition.. Steiner uses her art as a platform to address and comment on various social and political topics, aiming to provoke thought and inspire change.

Leona’s past as a professional modern dancer galvanized her work ethic and expanded her creativity, manifesting in the works she choreographed and performed. Movement is often noted in her photographs as if her subject dances She may also explore the idea that we are all interconnected on this planet and emphasizes the shared human experience. These themes collectively showcase Steiner’s artistic vision and the messages she conveys through her work. They provide insights into her artistic approach and the impact she aims to make.
