This solo exhibition by Joseph Walton presents a new body of work that captures a quieter, more contemplative side of New Orleans. Each photograph is printed on aluminum and set in a custom, hand-painted frame created by the artist to complement the image.
Joseph Walton’s journey in photography began in Kansas City, Missouri, during middle school, when he experimented with disposable cameras and frequent trips to a one-hour photo lab across from his home. In high school, he took his first 35mm black-and-white film class, learning the fundamentals of photography and darkroom technique. Years later, in the early 2000s, he began working digitally with an 8-megapixel Canon DSLR. Over the next five years, he opened his own fine art gallery, Valhalla Gallery, and co-founded one of the region’s first hacker/maker spaces.
In 2009, Walton moved to Chicago, where he apprenticed under acclaimed photographer Jai Girard, refining his skills in high-end portrait and event photography. In 2011, he relocated to New Orleans, working with award-winning photographer and gallerist Louis Sahuc. By 2013, Walton was selling his own work in New Orleans art markets, and in 2020, he opened his first solo gallery in the French Quarter. His work has since been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center and the Multi-Media Museum Moscow House of Photography, and featured in Black & White Magazine. This solo exhibition by Joseph Walton presents a new body of work that captures a quieter, more contemplative side of New Orleans.
