| Description of Exhibition: | |
| Shooters is an homage to a number of New Orleans photographers I have known over the last 45 years. I have worked for them, hired them, photographed them, or worked alongside them. Some are young, some old, and at least one is long dead. A few are well known, others less so, but all have been seriously dedicated to their profession. These are imaginary constructions. Divagations, if you will. Each picture begins with actual photographs, memory, and what I have learned from watching these photographers work. The inventions are grounded in the way they move through a scene, the way they handle a camera, the subjects they are drawn to, and the particular world they seem to create around themselves while working. The pictures move deliberately between documentation and memory and invention. Cameras, gestures, surroundings, subjects, and the photographer’s place within the scene all become part of the portrait. They have one foot in photographic reality and the other in the possibilities opened by working with machine intelligence. The intention is not to caricature or romanticize, but to suggest something about these people that a straightforward portrait might miss. I think of the images not as “straight” photographs but rather as storyboards from a dream—recognizable, rooted in fact, but allowed to wander. I have considerable respect and affection for all the photographers in this series. My key regret is that I only have space for these twelve out of the many shooters who work here. Shooters is a sincere and loving tribute to people who have shared my working world for much of my life.
