Join Artist Brittany Markert for an open studio of their ongoing photography project, In Rooms.
Spiritualism in Art & Photography gained momentum in the mid 1800s and early 1900s alongside the surrealist movement. It gained widespread noteriety through mediums who communicated with deceased and hosted seances, but in a less advertised movement, this artistic expression gave women a voice during a time when they were otherwise limited in their rights and expression. Spiritualism in art is less about communicating with the dead , and more about the artist following their intuition and creating freely in alignment to the present moment and energy. The title references Jennifer Higgies book, The Other Side: A Journey into Women, Art and the Spirit World. Her words became a mirror to my methods the last few years.
The open studio will feature new silver gelatin prints created between France & the French Quarter and art books exploring similar themes. Look forward to seeing you there!
Artist Bio
Brittany Markert (b. 1987) is a seeker of the truth and worlds hidden in plain sight. Inspired by the surrealist art movement, the writings of Carl Jung and personal catharsis, Brittany Markert created the rich and complex world In Rooms with her camera. Her work references archetypal studies of death, the self, the trickster and others noted by Carl Jung while forming familiar universal scenes of psychosis and our inner psychological landscapes. She references religious alchemy and spiritual mythologies through the divine feminine lens in an effort to speak for the lost and erased voices of women throughout many generations of storytelling. The work viewed in its entirety is an invitation for viewers to heal and to seek answers to the unknown. This process of enlightenment becomes not her own, but each of ours.
“For all the words I could not write, the camera became my pen” – Brittany Markert
Early influences for In Rooms include the works of Francesca Woodman, Duane Michals, Joel Peter Witkin and David Lynch.
Brittany resides in The French Quarter of New Orleans with her two cats, mannequins and darkroom.
