Dreams in Chalk by Laura Burlton

Dreams in Chalk features Houston photographer Laura Burlton’s on-going series of dream-like images. Shooting with toy cameras and film and inspired by her own two daughters, the stories from fairytales and literature are symbolized by Laura in chalk, a fragile medium easily washed or wiped away, likened to the fragility of childhood. The fleeting moments take you to another place or time, where dreams are made and everything seems possible. Adults recall an easier time, before reality sets in and these dreams are swept away and left behind much like chalk dust left after they are erased. The images serve as a reminder to dream once again.

Child Face by Cat Thrasher

This project is an art-science collaboration between photographer Cat Thrasher and Vanessa LoBue, assistant professor of developmental psychology at Rutgers University. The pictures of 4 to 6 year old children making emotional faces were originally created for a stimulus set intended for use in scientific studies. The children in these photographs exhibit specific combinations of muscle movements that are reliably characteristic of adult displays of emotion in empirical research.

Poet’s gallery invites PhotoNOLA attendees to a casual coffee and pastry reception with the artists on the morning of Saturday, Dec 10th starting at 9am.

“After the death of my grandmother, I discovered a box that contained clues to a horrific 80 year-old family secret. Using the objects in the box, combined with childhood memories, I was able to re-construct the story.”

Kirsten Hoving, “Night Wanderers”
“Night Wanderers is a series of photographs envisioning the cosmos. I photograph objects and nineteenth-century photographs frozen in or placed under disks of ice to create the feeling of galactic swirls of stars, galaxies and spiral nebulae.

For this series, I have been influenced not by the work of other photographers, but by the collage and assemblage art of the American artist Joseph Cornell. In the course of writing an art historical book on the artist, Joseph Cornell and Astronomy: A Case for the Stars (Princeton University Press, 2009), I became aware of the artist’s deep and abiding interest in astronomy. I also came to understand his creative process, which involved juxtaposing objects in often unexpected ways. His working method encouraged me to take risks, to experiment, and to be willing to destroy one object to create another. He also taught me to appreciate the stars.

Using ice as a still life object is always a challenging process. I partially thaw the ice to create transparent and translucent areas, then work quickly to photograph it. While I choose objects and photographs that recall earlier times (an outdated globe, old cartes-de-visite) to help remind us that star light is old light, the ice that encases them underscores the elegance and fragility of our place in the universe.”

Lisa McCarty, “Florid Interiors”
“From 2009-2010 I photographed my grandparents’ home in Arlington, Virginia, with a Polaroid Colorpack camera. Once a pristine environment characterized by its museum like composition of stately furniture, antiques, knick-knacks, and glassware their home of thirty years has gone into a state of disorder as they have aged. Everything is still in its same place, but has gone uncared for, conflicting greatly with my former vision of my grandparents and their home. In order to recreate and fully experience this sense of cognitive dissonance, I dismantle and collapse the images I have taken there via a process called emulsion lifting.

Emulsion lifts are achieved by immersing Polaroid prints in hot water, which causes the emulsion to separate from the paper backing. Once the emulsion is released, the image is reduced to a fragile translucent membrane that is malleable and skin-like. I then transfer the emulsion to watercolor paper, layering and altering multiple lifts. During this process the emulsion breaks apart, warps, and wrinkles, obscuring the image. Once combined, the organic shapes created from the remains of the images appear to be both withering and thriving.”

Statement:
My work is “abstracted” photography: representational but complicated by the obscuring and absenting of the subject. By inducing movement and the manipulation of light sources, I provoke a figurative tableau towards transforming into abstraction. Every shot, every video is the evidence of a performance, with the acts of montage and manipulation performed in-camera. Movement is the primary performative act. By manipulating the camera’s placement, aperture and exposure settings in relation to color fields, landscapes, light sources, precipitation and seascapes, my work pushes the boundaries of perception to create organic and lyrical freeforms. Resulting images retain their pure chroma. Each is a reinterpretation of the original subject, containing striations that move in varying intervals and rhythms, alternately compressing and expanding positive and negative space. However abstracted a composition may be, a firm representational vantage points plays host to personal objects and scenario manipulations, making each image a direct reflection of my ever-changing environment.

Elizabeth Kleinveld is a self-taught artist and photographer from New Orleans, who spent a year documenting the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

In 2007 Kleinveld shifted her focus to flowers, finding inspiration from the vibrant colors of exotic flowers and their reflection in water, which gives her work an abstract and painterly quality. Her work (photography and mixed media) has been exhibited in the United States Senate, New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), the Colorado Fine Arts Center, Galerie de Prinsenkelder in Amsterdam and the Expansionist Art Empire in Leiden.

Elizabeth also helped to develop the book Before During After which explores the changes in subject matter, media, and technique of artists work created before Katrina to after. The book emphasizes not only the effect of Hurricane Katrina but also the way individuals are influenced by their environments, particularly in times of dramatic upheaval. Adding depth to the pictorial representation, photographers have written intimate accounts of how Katrina changed their lives, work and vision of the future.

This exhibition‚”For the Love of Flowers”, reflects Kleinveld’s passion for flowers and shows the transformation of devastation into beauty and hope.

Randy Asprodites: Cover 17

In main gallery, Randy Asprodites:
New Orleans artist Randy Asprodites works with oil and mixed media on photographic prints. His most recent works on paper create a partnership between trompe l’oeil painting and photography that stays true to Asprodites’ abstract, minimalist sensibilities.

In rear gallery, David Armentor:
Focused on Iberia parish’s once vibrant sugar cane farming community, David Armentor’s “The Sugar Mill Sessions – Revisited” is a study that juxtaposes modernistic imagery of an active mill in the area during past harvesting seasons in contrast with a stark contemporary view of the industry in South Louisiana.

“Southern Isolation”
Lonely Landscapes – Gilded Redemption

Anna Hrnjak’s lonely landscapes are a representation of her travels. She makes many journey’s from here to there and back again. Along the way she is searching for objects and form that are nestled in desolation that elude to personal metaphors for the viewer.

After leaving the world of photography for five year for a mixed media that he found as a way of healing from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, E. Paul Julien returns to his love of photography combing old techniques of transferring images on top of gold leaf. He contributes this new body of work to the devastation and shows how by losing everything you gain even more. E. Paul Julien won portfolio competitions in B&W Magazine in 2007 and 2008.
