Penn Station: a distant view
Photographs by Connecticut artist Becca Fitzpatrick alongside a historical retrospective.

“Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves. Even when we had Penn Station, we couldn’t afford to keep it clean. We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.”
- “Farewell to Penn Station,” New York Times editorial, October 30, 1963

The tear down of the Beaux Arts-style Pennsylvania Station in 1963 was pivotal in the formation of the modern historic preservation movement. As someone who was not alive when the colossal landmark existed, Fitzpatrick’s only perspective on the disastrous demise of this architectural monolith is through period photographs exhibited behind Plexiglas at the modern Penn Station. In order to re-imagine the destruction of the original station, Fitzpatrick photographed two of the period images, then photographed her own photographs, printed, photocopied and photographed the copies. Each generation lost more information until the 84 granite columns on the station’s exterior and the 15-story waiting room became fragmentary and distant survivors of the station’s architectural grandeur. Her dual large-scale photographs mirror the station’s monumental proportions as well as its faded memory. The exhibit will hang from October 22 through January.

In 1953, while still working for the Sewerage and Water Board, Allison donated 323 4” x 5” prints of his work to New Orleans Public Library. Following his death on January 18, 1964, Mr. Allison’s daughter, Elizabeth Law, gave additional prints and his entire collection of negatives to the Library’s Louisiana Division. In 2009, Division staff, with volunteer assistance, completed a multi-year project to scan all of Allison’s negatives. The entire collection can be viewed online.

This exhibit, in some ways “The Best of Alexander Allison” comprises selections of his views of the city of New Orleans and his images of family-related activities at home, around Louisiana, and in Bay Saint Louis.

Alexander Allison photos are on display at New Orleans Public Library, in the Louisiana Division (Main Library, 3rd floor) into 2011.

Crescent City Illumenations is an ongoing series of Lumen Prints, an early photographic process using organic objects as subjects, and the sun as developer. I’ve spent the last 10 years taking daily walks in the Garden District. As I began experimenting with the lumen print process, my subject matter became the fallen flowers and leaves that I gathered as they crossed my path during these walks. The result is a series of images that reflect my own personal and creative development as a person, and as an artist. – Natasha Sanchez

Piano Farm: Lori Vrba

Sunday, December 5, 2010
Opening: Sunday, Dec 5, 7-9pm

Louise Arsene Vitry House
2003 Dumaine Street
New Orleans, LA 70116
504- 275-9845

This one-night only show will feature the tender, haunting and emotionally evocative works of Chapel Hill-based photographer, Lori Vrba. Curated by Edward Hebert, this event will mark the debut of “Piano Farm”, Vrba’s most recent collection. “Piano Farm” speaks to the connection between an artist and a place of endless creative possibility. Join us for a night of New Orleans style cocktails, music and art in the historic Louise Arsene Vitry House.

The Louise Arsene Vitry house was built in 1855 for free woman of color, Louise Arsene Vitry, her consort, Archille Barthelmy Courcelle, and their 5 children. Louise Vitry was sued for possession of the house in 1858 and in a case that went all the way to the Louisiana State Supreme Court, she won final control of the house in 1860.
