Hours: Mon – Sat, 11am-6pm

Through The Looking Glass features mixed media works by Sean Yseult and Louis St. Lewis. The exhibition will include canvasses, studies and framed ceramic tiles of pigment and archival prints, some of which spotlight the ladies of local burlesque troupe, Fleur De Tease. The canvasses are multimedia works combining pigment prints, collage, acrylics, pastels and gold leaf, while the studies employ a mix of archival prints with collage, acrylics and pastels. St. Lewis’ skewed vision of the world combined with Yseult’s love of photographers Bellocq, Witkin and Avedon make for a playful romp through the world of mermaids, showgirls, royalty and beautiful ladies.

Jungeun Lee: Silenced Suffering

December 1, 2011 – January 29, 2012
Opening: Saturday, Dec. 10, 6-9pm

New Orleans Photo Alliance
1111 St. Mary St.
New Orleans, LA 70130
Hours: Sat+Sun 12-4pm and by appt.

In “Silenced Suffering: The Comfort Women Project”, Jungeun Lee metaphorically portrays the approximately two hundred thousand women who were involved in sexual slavery during the Second World War. Since Japan’s defeat, the comfort women have struggled through the physical and emotional consequences of their enslavement. Lee’s work quietly and powerfully evokes their testimonies in order to explore these tragic historic memories.

Jungeun Lee was the recipient of the 2010 PhotoNOLA Review Prize.

“Lee’s project alludes to the strength and fragility of the Korean women who were used as “comfort women” for the Japanese military in WWII. This project does not deal with the descriptive nature of this unfortunate time in these women’s lives, but it is Jungeun Lee’s attempt at an emphathic connection to the emotional torture that these women would have initially experienced and continued to experience throughout their lives. All aspects of the work fit well together.”
- Melanie McWhorter, photo-eye Book Division Manager

Bio
Jungeun Lee was born in South Korea and received a B.E. from Hoseo University in Korea and a MFA in Photography from University of North Texas. During her study at the University of North Texas, Jungeun discovered a piece of Korean history that she previously had not learned. This discovery led to the research and development of “Silenced Suffering: The Comfort Women Project”. She spent the entire 3 years of her graduate career researching and making work about this unknown history. In 2010, she completed her MFA exhibition, “Silenced Suffering”, at 500X Gallery in Dallas. Jungeun was the first place recipient of the 2010 PhotoNOLA Review Prize. She currently lives and works in Dallas, Texas.

Miriam Waterman has employed the camera to pierce the dermis of her subjects and splay open that which lies inside. Asking her subjects to reflect self-perception with a word or phrase stenciled onto a body part of choice while posing in a setting of choice, the artist uses her shutter to unveil each individual’s core essence, something not usually appreciated in a day to day toil.

Jonathan Traviesa Lecture

December 7, 2010
7:30pm

New Orleans Photo Alliance
1111 St. Mary Street
New Orleans, LA 70130

Jonathan Traviesa won the inaugural 2009 Michael P. Smith Fund for Documentary Photography (MPS Fund) grant for his series of environmental portraits, “New Portraits in New Orleans”. Traviesa is using the $5,000 grant to propel his portrait series in a new direction – to document the newest residents of New Orleans – ones that have helped rebuild and restructure the city in positive ways. Traviesa will speak about this new focus and show photographs made during the grant year. Traviesa writes:

“This project has reinvigorated my life and place in New Orleans. To find and document the various peoples and communities that are literally rebuilding the city, reshaping urban space, changing broken policy, and expanding the cultural fabric is overwhelming – in the best way. To talk with the folks who are actively making the new future recently begun in New Orleans is to witness the city change and grow before my eyes. And yet, New Orleans will always maintain its core identity. My photographs represent that through the stylistic platform of my larger project.”

The MPS Fund’s first juror, Jeff L. Rosenheim, Curator, Department of Photographs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, selected Traviesa’s project. In his words: “Traviesa’s photographs delight the eye and thrill the heart. In addition, they reflect something often lost in contemporary art practice: patience and real communication between artist and sitter. In essence, Traviesa allows himself to be a medium through which he and the residents of New Orleans can express their desires, worries, thoughts, and dreams.”

BIO:
Jonathan Traviesa is a photographer and artist living in New Orleans since the late 1990s. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in New Orleans, Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York. In 2005, the Times Picayune named his Katrina photo-sign installation best art show the year. He has been teaching Photoshop at NOAFA since 2005 and is a founding member of The Front, an artist-run gallery founded in 2008.

Traviesa released his first book, “Portraits” with a concurrent exhibition at The Front during October and November of 2009. As part of PhotoNOLA, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art exhibited a selection of his portraits from the book. Traviesa was awarded the New Orleans Photo Alliance’s inaugural Michael P. Smith Grant in December 2009. His work is collected privately around the United States and publicly by the Ogden Museum and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Jessica Ingram, recipient of the 2009 PhotoNOLA Review Prize, splits her time between Nashville, TN and Oakland, CA. Her series “A Civil Rights Memorial” documents sites throughout the south where Civil Rights era atrocities, Klan activities, and slave trade occurred. Ingram’s work explores the consequences of this history as it continues to reverberate in those communities and the landscape, memorializing the affected individuals and events through her images.

Darius Himes, of Radius Books, said “Her work is informed and motivated by that most significant of impulses—the desire to move forward by bearing witness to the prejudices around us. Only through setting the one in contrast to the other—the ideal against its antithesis—can progress be made. In this sense, her work is educational, both socially and spiritually. It is a supremely important project.”

Sirens, sea-dwelling nymphs who sing so enchantingly that they lure sailors off-course, are the subject of Christy Rogers’ collection: SIREN, wherein the Hawaiian born artist pays tribute to these mysterious and mythical creatures. The collection’s origin lies in Rogers’ experiments with spatial relationships that over time developed into these austere, unique portraits. Rogers sought out to create a sanctuary for the viewer, a place separate from the intrusions and chaos of the world where she could give voice to nuanced, mysterious feelings, those too elusive to reduce into words.

Rogers’ figures represent something internal and widely experienced. She successfully and intelligently depicts the wordless doubts and dreams that all of humanity is heir to. Beneath the wondrous exterior, at their core, these strange figures are more human than human; their souls are bared and radiant to one and all.

Her neo figurative approach to image making is achieved using simple physics, involving the refraction and reflection of light through water. Creating all of her images in-camera and without post-production manipulation, each image involves extensive experimentation using the elements of light, water, color and movement.
