Picturing War: Ashley Gilbertson, Sebastiano Tomada Piccolomini and Jungeun Lee

Sunday, December 11, 6-8pm
Free and open to the public

Contemporary Arts Center
900 Camp Street
New Orleans, LA 70130

While many photographers cover conflict by showing scenes of action and carnage, the three photographers featured on this panel choose to focus on other ways that war can be interpreted through photography. Award winning photojournalist Ashley Gilbertson, 2010 PhotoNOLA Review Prize winner Jungeun Lee and emerging conflict photographer Sebastiano Tomada Piccolomini will each present individual slideshows of their work. A group discussion moderated by Pulitzer Prize winning photo editor Stella Kramer will follow. The juxtaposition between three unique viewpoints will provide an insightful conversation into war, humanity, and the role of photography in documenting and communicating the effects of conflicts and their aftermath.

Video & Multimedia Storytelling with Dave Anderson & NPR’s Claire O’Neill

Thursday, December 8, 2011
Noon-4pm
International House Hotel

Registration fee: $25 | Register Here

In this introductory workshop photographers will examine the growing role of multimedia in contemporary photography. Recent technological advances have opened up exciting new platforms for image-makers. Students will learn the benefits of incorporating multimedia into their practice and explore its possibilities as a means to telling compelling stories.

Led by award winning photographer/filmmaker Dave Anderson and NPR multimedia producer Claire O’Neill, the class will view and discuss examples of effective multimedia pieces by photographers who have successfully transitioned to multimedia production. Participants can expect to learn tips on shooting for video, audio recording, researching and preparing stories, documentary interviewing techniques, and doubletasking to record audio and take photos in the field. The class will include an overview of the equipment and editing applications available, detailed in handouts, as well as tips to help you market your services.

This program is presented in partnership with the ASMP New Orleans/Gulf South chapter. Refreshments will be provided.

Philip Gould: Landscape and Grass Roots

December 3-31, 2011
Opening: Saturday, Dec 3, 2011, 6-8pm

LeMieux Galleries
Hours: Mon-Sat 10-6

In nearly four decades photographing in Louisiana, Philip Gould has found fascination with that common ground where landscape and culture meet. In this lush, soggy terrain where nature seems to have the last word, the hand of man still has tremendous impact. People manifest cultural expression, spontaneously and naturally, as if from Louisiana’s grass roots. We impact the landscape and, in
abstract and very real ways, it nourishes us.

Based in Lafayette, Philip Gould has photographed throughout the state, the south, the nation and beyond. His work has been published in over a dozen books on Louisiana as well as various periodicals from around the world. His photography has become one of the largest privately-held photographic archives on the Bayou State. His latest book Acadiana with text by Carl Brasseaux was published by LSU Press in May of 2011.

Josephine Sacabo’s photographs transfer the viewer into a world of constructed beauty. Built upon a foundation of poetry and literature, her many portfolios are visual manifestations of the written word. Sacabo divides her time between New Orleans and Mexico. Both locales inform her work – culminating in imagery that is as dreamlike, surreal, and romantic as the places that she calls home. On view through Jan. 8, 2012.

For over three decades, artists Josephine Sacabo and Ersy have shared inspirations and ideas through a friendship based on a mutual respect and joy in one another’s lives. In keeping with that spirit of friendship, inspiration and collaboration, two exhibitions – Ersy: Architect of Dreams and Sacabo’s Óyeme Con Los Ojos – share space in the Ogden Museum’s galleries, allowing the viewer to see the dialogue between these unique bodies of work.

Read more about Ersy and Josephine Sacabo in the New York Times article: Life and Art, Side by Side in the French Quarter

There will be panel discussion/gallery talk scheduled.

Shown above: Óyeme Sorda, 2010, photogravure printed on handmade Japanese tissue and chine-colléd velvet rag paper.
