Michael Grecco: NAKED AMBITION:
An R-Rated Look at an X-Rated Industry

December 1, 2011 – February 16, 2012
Opening: Thursday, Dec 8, 4-7pm
Talk: Saturday, Dec 10 at Martine Chaisson Gallery, 4pm

Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club
225 Bourbon Street
New Orleans, LA 70130
504-524-0010
Hours: Noon-close, Daily

The Naked Ambition: An R Rated Look at an X Rated Industry project contains over 200 photographs of actors, filmmakers and personalities in the world of adult entertainment. Grecco photographed his subjects during the 2006 AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas, the convention which surrounds the annual AVN Awards.

The accompanying book’s forewords, written by rock musician Dave Navarro and Hustler magazine editor Larry Flynt, discuss modern culture’s acceptance of pornography into the mainstream, which allows an overtly sexual work like this to be considered a coffee table book.

Included among the portrait subjects are Larry Flynt, Jenna Jameson, Ron Jeremy, Chi Chi LaRue, Tera Patrick, Alexandra Silk, Katsuni, Dana DeArmond, Sunny Lane, Kurt Lockwood, and Michelle Aston. Uncommon in pornography-related works, the photographs have not been altered with any significant image editing or photo manipulation, thus avoiding the layer of fantasy usually applied to actors in this field.

Mr. Grecco will give a talk about the project on Saturday, Dec 10 at the Martine Chaisson Gallery. The presentation begins at 4pm, free and open to the public.

Hours: Mon – Sat, 11am-6pm

Through The Looking Glass features mixed media works by Sean Yseult and Louis St. Lewis. The exhibition will include canvasses, studies and framed ceramic tiles of pigment and archival prints, some of which spotlight the ladies of local burlesque troupe, Fleur De Tease. The canvasses are multimedia works combining pigment prints, collage, acrylics, pastels and gold leaf, while the studies employ a mix of archival prints with collage, acrylics and pastels. St. Lewis’ skewed vision of the world combined with Yseult’s love of photographers Bellocq, Witkin and Avedon make for a playful romp through the world of mermaids, showgirls, royalty and beautiful ladies.

Statement:
Mississippi comes from the native Ojibwe words gichi-ziibi and misi-ziibi, meaning Big River and Great River.

Big River is a series shot entirely on the banks of the Mississippi River in 5 different areas of the Greater New Orleans region over 3 months. It comprises portraits, landscape imagery and still life of found objects, together giving its audience an understanding of a community and culture depending and thriving on the river. Over the past 12 years, Edwards has visited, photographed, taught and lost a family member to violence within Orleans Parish. Edwards has finally moved to New Orleans full time, and continues to examine her complicated relationship with the city; Big River is a study of her new home, her new life, and the river that runs through them.
